4. Conclusions The Amedeo VIII Bridge over the Stura di Lanzo River is a critical infrastructure for road mobility between Turin and the nearby town of Settimo Torinese. This river crossing is currently being instrumented for continuous and persistent Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), alongside another nearby infrastructure, the Regina Margherita Bridge over the Po River. For both case studies, the designed solution encompasses a ground-based component (which, in turn, consists of both physically-attached sensors and noncontact devices for proximity sensing) and a space-borne component (InSAR data from the COSMO-SkyMed satellite constellation). The design of these two SHM systems, both in terms of hardware and software, as well as in all of its contact and non-contact components, has been informed and guided by the operational evaluation of the respective target infrastructure, its past history, and its setting in the current transportation network of the municipality of Turin. In the case of the Amedeo VIII, reported here in full detail, the aspects deemed to be monitored concern: • The half-joints, as their presence introduces local points subject to potential fragile failure. • The piers’ foundations, as the R.C. caisson system is compatible with dense gravel substratum, but require monitoring due to river scouring and groundwater fluctuations. • The retrofitting works, especially the external unbonded prestressing tendons, as their correct behaviour is essential for the current structural configuration, as intended after the 2009-2011 interventions. Thus, special attention will be given to monitoring the behaviour of the half-joints, foundation settlements, and the long-term effects of the retrofit intervention. As of the time of writing, the SHM system is currently installed and under activation. This contribution briefly presented the rationale and motivations behind the tailored SHM strategy, aimed at supporting predictive maintenance and ensuring long-term operational safety. Future works will detail the processing of the measured data, the calibration of a high-fidelity Finite Element Model, and the derived data-driven and model-based alert thresholds for Early Warning, as well as presenting the final outcomes of this Structural Health Monitoring project. Acknowledgements The members of the ISABHEL consortium would like to thank the following persons and institutions: Mr Pietro Colacillo for the preliminary CAD design and FE model of the bridge; Mr Yassir Hamzaoui and Mrs Roberta Marini, from NHAZCA S.r.l., for the analysis of the InSAR data; Mr Amerigo Strozziero and Mr Giuseppe Poppa, from the Ufficio Ponti Comune di Torino, for the technical and logistical support; and Prof Francesco Tondolo and Dr Antonino Quattrone, from the historical archive of Politecnico di Torino’s Mastrlab laboratory, for providing some of the original documentation. The project is co-financed by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the ‘5G FOR L’ART’ call, using 5G technologies and other monitoring methodologies.
