Lazzarino 1, Pisa 56122, Italy Abstract Following the 2018 collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, Italy, a national program was launched to identify factors that may compromise the safety and functionality of bridges. The Ministry of Infrastructure issued Guidelines for the control and supervision of road bridges and viaducts, promoting an interdisciplinary, multi-level risk assessment that covers structural, seismic, hydraulic and landslide hazards, from preliminary screening to detailed evaluation. Since 2021, universities and research institutes grouped in the Consorzio Fabre have advanced research on landslide–bridge interaction. In this context, the MARIE project (Methodological Approaches for RIsk assessment in the framework of landslide bridge IntEraction) unfolds through several phases, starting from case-study analyses to capture the variety of interactions between landslides and bridges. The knowledge produced supports a more effective application of the Guidelines, including proposed operating instructions to resolve interpretative ambiguities and to indicate priorities for future updates.
