alternatively, complete demolition and reconstruction, with a high-cost steel solution estimated to cost approximately ten million euros (Fig.1).

San Donnino viaduct is an important branch of the road connecting Serchio middle valley to Lunigiana and Aulla village, so its closing would have meant traffic collapse due to the forced transit the middle of San Donnino village, which is crossed by a very tight road, to impose an alternating one-way with a semaphore [2]. Given the importance of the infrastructure and the cost estimates for the initial design solutions, in October 2022 the local authority commissioned Maffeis Engineering S.p.A. (VI, Italy) – an engineering firm specialising in the design and construction of special structures in steel and reinforced concrete, whether prestressed or not – to propose alternative solutions. Analysis of the original design, together with a study of failure dynamics and the identification of construction methods, enabled the development of a highly efficient consolidation scheme, to the extent that the viaduct was reopened in April 2023, at a total cost of approximately €300,000.00.
