Structural Integrity and Interactions of Materials in Civil Engineering Structures (SIIMCES-2025) Experimental Study on Behaviour of Steel Beams Subjected to Impact Loading P. Saravana Kumar a , S. Given the widespread use of steel beams in various structural applications, understanding their response to sudden and temporary forces is crucial. Both analytical and experimental methods were employed to evaluate energy absorption, stiffness, vibration characteristics, and deflection behavior in ISMB 100, ISMB 125, and ISMB 200 beam sections. Static loading tests were conducted using a screw jack to assess the beam's stiffness and determine the load-deflection relationship. Impact loads were generated using a falling mass, and the resulting deflection and vibration responses were recorded to analyze dynamic behaviour. The experimental results were validated through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations using ANSYS to ensure accuracy and reliability. The findings revealed that deeper beams exhibit higher stiffness and lower deflection under both static and dynamic loads. Moreover, differences in natural frequencies affect the dynamic performance of the beam sections. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanical behavior of steel beams under varying loading conditions, contributing to improved structural design. The results assist engineers in selecting optimal beams for dynamic load applications, enhancing safety and durability in real-world structures.
