For Sulphur Recovery Units (SRU) of Hydrocarbon Processing Industry, it is not so. Here concrete pits are used for storing molten sulphur and hence concrete is exposed to corrosive materials. In BPCL- Kochi Refinery, during an internal inspection of a sulphur pit, bulging was noticed on the acid resistant brick lining. After removal of brick lining, sulphur attack was observed on RCC walls of pit. Full repair and refurbishment of the wall was carried out accordingly. As a case study approach, this paper deals with various aspects of sulphur attack on concrete including symptoms, damage patterns etc. It also includes materials & methodology adopted in refurbishment jobs. The paper shall impart awareness about sulphur attack damages to industry/technical experts.
