that, depending on the technology by which such intervention would be performed, the density of the backfill material could be modified, thus modifying the overall mass of the system and the acting seismic forces. The numerical analyses presented in this study will be further extended in the future. In particular, the numerical model will be profitably adopted to estimate the effects of geometrical characteristics of existing masonry arch bridges on their structural response with respect to both vertical and horizontal loads. Moreover, the effects of local damages will be also investigated, as well as the response under seismic loads acting in the transversal direction, which has not been addressed in the present study.
