plastically damped systems to flag-shaped damped systems. The results obtained show that the design procedure is feasible and effective. The reinforced concrete building retrofitted with the self-centering shape memory alloy braces responds according to the hypotheses and predictions of the design method. The optimal damper distribution rule is successful in ensuring uniform drift and ductility demands even if those of the existing structure are not. The SC-SMA dampers prove to be effective in mitigating the maximum transient drifts and satisfying the Life Safety verifications of the structural members. The self-centering properties of the SMA braces improve the seismic performance compared to “more traditional” bracing systems since they limit the residual inter-story drifts thus allowing the columns to recover their original position making them repairable even after strong earthquakes. The potentialities of SMA-based systems in terms of costs may be made commercially more attractive by using Cu-based SMAs due to their low cost as compared with NiTi-based SMAs.
