Figure 12: Wear scar profiles of boronized MSS at 1000°C of (a) 13Cr4Ni and (b) 16Cr5Ni and at 950°C of (c) 13Cr4Ni and (d)16Cr5Ni MSS. Wear rate and mechanism The wear rates of the bare and boronized MSS are as shown in Fig. 13. The wear rates of the boronized MSS samples are lower than the bare MSS samples. The wear rates of the boronized 13Cr4Ni MSS at 950 and 1000°C are 73 and 60 % lower and in the case of boronized 16Cr5Ni MSS, it is 76 and 80 % lower than their respective bare counterparts. The presence of NaCl in the tribocorrosion condition could have acted as a lubricant. R.A. Garcia-Leon et al. discussed the tribo chemical products and behaviour developed on AIS 316 stainless steel in Hank’s solution. They borided the samples at 950°C for 4h and when slid against an Alumina country body at a load of 10 N, they reported a specific wear rate of 2.91 × 10 -6 mm 3 /Nm [19].

Figure 13: Wear rates of (a) MSS samples and (b) alumina counter-body, bare: (i) 13Cr4Ni MSS and (ii)16Cr-5Ni MSS and boronized 13Cr4Ni and 16Cr5Ni MSS at (iii - iv) 1000 ℃ and (v – vi) 950 ℃ in tribocorrosion tests.
