2.1. Archetypal building

The structural unit of the entire built- up area of the “Sassi” of Matera is represented by the isolated “lamione”, a residential unit made entirely of calcarenite masonry. Its main characteristics are summarized in Table 1.

Table 1. Isolated “lamione” characteristics. Side walls thickness

The modeling of this archetypal building is realized in the software MIDAS FEA NX (www.cspfea.net). Modal analysis is performed, and the main global vibration modes are obtained, with the participating mass percentage M and the fundamental vibration period T. The results of modal analysis may be useful for investigating the displacements and deformed configurations of the structure in the three main directions, identifying possible mechanisms to be further examined with additional evaluations. Preliminary results are reported in Fig. 2. Then, the simple out-of-plane overturning mechanism of load-bearing walls (e.g. the wall shown in Fig. 2b) is investigated. The capacity at the Life-Safety Limit State a g(LSLS) results equal to 0.160g, which, compared with the demand 0.139g related to the specific site seismic hazard, demonstrate that this collapse mechanism is verified.
