A redundant structural monitoring system was then designed to detect any development of cracks in the vault. A continuous and periodic monitoring system was designed to verify the evolution of individual cracks and of the overall geometry of the tunnel, based on the inspections. The continuous monitoring system will use LoRaWAN wireless

technology to connect more than 100 sensors such as LVDTs displacement transducers, inclinometers, piezometers, and temperature sensors to gateways and cloud servers that collect and analyze data on the tunnel’s behavior in near -real time. The monitoring system is an example of IoT and Smart Road technologies being applied to existing tunnels to improve their safety. Periodic monitoring will be carried out by topographic survey of optical targets, rigidly connected to brackets embedded in the tunnel vault at different sections of the tunnel. This paper describes an extensive monitoring project for a tunnel of high extension and contributes to the field of tunnel inspection, assessment and management.

6.1. Data Management Platform For monitoring data from instrumental recordings, we will utilize a computer platform connected to a website. Various users (Contractor, Designer, Construction Manager, Client, etc.) will have access to this site with dedicated passwords. The frequency of readings for individual instruments and the storage of datasets in case of threshold exceedance will be coordinated with the Client and the Designer, considering data storage and processing capacity.
