Considering the shear tests (Fig. 10 and 11), the global shear distortion of the unit cell,  w or  u, is caused by shortening/lengthening of elements subjected to axial forces, by shear deformation of elements under shear forces, and by flexural deflection of elements subjected to bending moments.
