Editorial by the ESIS President The ECF24 is just a few weeks ahead of us. More than 600 papers and particpants are expected to make another great event in ESIS history. Zagreb and Željko Božić with his team are ready and eager to host us in the last week of August, including the Summer School on Fatigue and Fracture Modelling and Analysis. All information about the ECF24 can be found on the website ( LINK ). Submission of abstracts is officially open until 15th July.
In the first half of 2024 ESIS activities were intensive, including a number of supported conferences and events, as you can see in this issue of Newsletter. The ExCo had an online meeting on 16th of April with usual Agenda and focus on ECF24. In the meantime, 4 SIs (IJF, EFA, EFM and TAFM) from ECF23 are completed. In total, 57 papers are published, just in time, before the new action after ECF24. Agreement with Elsevier for the period 2024-2026 (3 years) is signed and sealed! I kindly remind NGs chairpersons to settle the membership before ECF24 to become eligible to vote at the ESIS Council meeting. One of the important issues will be the bid for ECF26 in 2028. So far, two bids have been proposed: Seville and Rome. TCs are active as always, some more, some less… The new one, TC19, on Data-driven methods and machine learning applied to structural integrity, is now launched with the aim to follow these methods in connection to Structural Integrity and to open new research possibilities that will strongly impact practical application of theoretical knowlegde. I would like once again to remind all TC chairpersons to use our website for all information regarding their activities, past, present and future. In 2024 the Procedia Structural Integrity so far has released 9 new issues (Volumes 52-60, (https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/procedia-structural-integrity/issues), what is far the most ever since the starting year 2016. In total more than 4,000 pages and about 700 papers are published, in the scope of the following Conferences: FDSHM, ESIAM23, ICSI 2023, ESICC 2023, FatDes 2023, ICSID 2023 and ICONS 2023. As previously announced, the ESIS Publishing House (ESIS-PH) enables ESIS members to publish Monographies and Scholarly Editions, edited volumes and special technical publications. All the volumes, are published as "Open Access", being completely free of charge both for authors and for readers. In the meantime, a new service has been established, ESIS preprint service (ESIS-PS), inspired by ESIS aims to develop and extend knowledge in all aspects of Structural Integrity and disseminate that knowledge worldwide to improve the safety and performance of engineering equipment, individual components and structures. ESIS Preprint Service (ESIS-PS) is an online archive containing works or data that are focused on ESIS topics. It is not necessary to be an ESIS member to upload works or data in ESIS-PS. A DOI is assigned to all the accepted files. The server maintenance is sponsored by ESIS, courtesy by our major driving force - Francesco Iacoviello. Aleksandar Sedmak

HUNGARY Participation of Hungary in EU’s structural integrity related R&D projects
Core members of ESIS Hungarian Chapter applied by Hungarian research institutes such as Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. for Applied Research and the HUN-REN Centre of Energy Research are closely linked to European Union’s structural integrity related R&D projects dealing with structural integrity, structural health monitoring and related topics. Some of these are presented below but are not exhaustive. The ENTENTE project (No. 900018) has been funded under the EURATOM 2019-2020 Framework Programme call NFRP-01 Ageing phenomena of components and structures and operational issues in 2020. The project has a duration of 4 years and will be implemented between September 2020 and August 2024 with 27 partners from 12 countries. The overall objective of the European Database for Multiscale Modelling of Radiation Damage (ENTENTE) project is to combine the modelling and experimental knowledge and data base on the ageing of RPV steels with existing results, using past projects and crossborder expert groups, and to reach an "entente alliance" on the extensive knowledge of relevant ageing phenomena. In this way, ENTENTE will contribute to improving the safety of nuclear power plants by enabling the development of quantitative predictive and/or corrective methods, operational practices to support the long term safe operation not only of the existing nuclear fleet but also of new light water reactors (Generation III/III+). The objective is to develop innovative data management tools to access and maximise the use of results from multi-scale modelling programmes. https://rdgroups.ciemat.es/web/materiales/entente The APAL (Advanced PTS Analysis for LTO, No. 945253) project was funded under the EURATOM 2019-2020 Framework Programme NFRP-02 Safety assessments for Long Term Operation (LTO) upgrades of Generation II and III reactors in 2020. The project started in October 2020 and will close in September 2024. In addition to 14 European institute-laboratories, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and Oakridge Consulting International (OCI) are participating in the project. The APAL project aims to develop safety assessment methods for nuclear power plants with the objective of improving their safety across Europe. The main thrust of the work is to develop an advanced probabilistic assessment method for Pressurised Thermal Shock (PTS), to quantify the safety margins required to improve Long Term Operation (LTO) and to develop best practice guidance.
https://www.apal-project.eu The DELISA-LTO (DEscription of the extended LIfetime and its influence on the SAfety operation and construction materials performance – Long Term Operation with no compromises in the safety, No. 101061201) project was funded under the EURATOM Framework Programme call NRT-01-01 (Safety of operating nuclear power plants and research reactors) in 2021. The consortium (Figure 3)
14
includes all the countries operating VVER units in the European region and all the research organisations with an interest. The DELISA-LTO project, launched in June 2022 and running until the end of May 2026, aims to improve operational safety and extend the lifetime of the project by identifying the most critical components for LTO and describing the impact of LTO on material properties. Development of non-destructive methods, simulation tools and methodologies for early failure prediction. To make recommendations for the future operation of nuclear power plants and to assess their life extension. https://delisa-lto.eu/ The FRACTESUS (Fracture mechanics testing of irradiated RPV steels by means of sub-sized specimens, No. 900014) project was funded under the EURATOM 2019-2020 Framework Programme NFRP-04 Innovation for Generation II and III reactors in 2020. The project started in October 2020 and will end on 30 September 2024. In addition to several European laboratories, the project also involves the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and the Central Research Institute for Electric Power Industry of Japan (CRIEPI). From the very beginning of the European nuclear programme, the degradation of RPVs was recognised. Surveillance programmes were therefore put in place to monitor degradation. This typically involved the use of Charpy-sized test specimens (10 x 10 x 55 mm³) of representative materials, which were irradiated in monitoring capsules under representative conditions. The project will use the material from the broken Charpy specimens to test the brittleness of the reactor vessel using miniature (10 x 10 x 4 mm³) CT specimens. This project will also benefit Generation III+ and future nuclear systems. Structural materials for future nuclear systems, in particular for Generation IV and fusion systems, will have to cope with high radiation conditions. https://fractesus-h2020.eu/en STRUMAT-LTO (STRUctural MATerials research for safe Long Term Operation of LWR NPPs, No. 945272) is one of the EURATOM research framework programmes (NFRP-2019-2020-01 - Ageing phenomena of components and structures and operational issues) adopted in 2020, led by the Hungarian institute, the Energy Research Centre (HUN-REN-CER), together with the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) of the Netherlands, together with 17 EU institutes and a research centre in Ukraine. The consortium received EU funding in 2020 and research has started, with completion planned for 2024. The aim of the project is to clarify the role of Mn and Ni alloying elements in the radiation damage of nuclear reactor vessel material.
