Procedia Structural Integrity 64 (2024) 1689–1695

SMAR 2024 – 7th International Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures Bio-based products for a more sustainable construction sector. Technical, environmental and social performances and impacts Patrizia Ghisellini a, *, Ivana Quinto a , Renato Passaro a , Sergio Ulgiati a,b a University of Naples Parthenope”, Centro Direzionale Isola C4, 80143 Naples, Italy b Beijing Normal University, Beijing China In Italy, several circular start-ups active in the bio-construction sector are producing innovative materials and building products (e.g., vegetal materials for insulation, bio-bricks, thermo-acoustic insulating panels, screeds and substrates) as well as construction techniques by using local agricultural products (e.g., hemp) and by-products (e.g. wheat straw, rice straw, rice husk, food waste) as alternatives to the conventional building materials, products and processes. These products are in some cases also certified with an Environmental Product Declaration or by the ANAB-ICEA certification specific for bio-construction products and offer many advantages (technological, aesthetics, environmental, social, healthy and comfort living). This study presents the selected CSUs operating in Italy in the bio construction industry, the characteristics of their activities and their bio-materials and products. . The results of the literature review in terms of environmental data about some bio-materials and products are presented and analysed. Such data will be useful for performing the further steps of the overall research (and in particular an LCA of the bio construction materials and products of the selected CSUs) of which, this study has presented some preliminary results emerged from the mapping of the Italian construction industry, qualitative interviews and literature review. © 2024 The Authors.
