Figure 3: Force vs. slab rotation diagram of an exemplary column. Intersection points of curves of failure criteria and flexural behaviour of the slab denote punching shear failure. 4. Case Study In both case studies, the Fe-SMA material from re-fer AG was employed. re-fer AG, based in Switzerland, operates as a supplier and contractor specializing in Fe-SMA strengthening components. Their main products are Fe-SMA strips called “re-plates” and Fe-SMA bars called “re-bars” (re-fer.eu). In the two case studies the application of the re-bars and re-plates is examined. The concept behind both retrofitting approaches is that pre-stressing over the supports in the hogging moment areas and in the sagging moment areas reduces the rotation of the slab around the support, thereby increasing the punching shear resistance. The latter approach is particularly suitable for retrofitting where approximation level 4 was used for the assessment of the punching resistance and additional flexural reinforcement is required in the field for the redistributed forces.
