• Results showed that shear deformations in specimen S are higher than RS and C. Since shear deformations were neglected in OpenSees, for substandard column lateral load capacity in S was overestimated by up to 20%. However, ATENA could capture the lateral load capacity of specimen S with better accuracy compared to OpenSees. • The results obtained from OpensSees model had higher accuracy in terms of CED, hysteretic load-displacement path, and lateral load bearing capacity for RS and C specimens due to consideration of strain penetration stemming from longitudinal rebar slip at column-foundation interface. For instance, the CED obtained through OpenSees on average had less than 5% difference with experimental results, while the CED difference was on average 15% for the ATENA results. • Results reveal that the strain-wise assessment of TBEC (2018) is reliable for the performance level estimation of three different types of specimens, particularly the substandard specimen which is quite common in the existing aged RC building stock in Turkey. Acknowledgements This research was granted in the scope of the bilateral collaboration between the research councils of Turkey (TUBITAK) and the United Kingdom (RCUK) under the grant number 216M379. The authors are most thankful to the Fibrobeton company for their continuous support from the construction phase of the specimens to the testing stage. References ACI Committee, 2019.
