Conclusions This study proposes a Wine Glass model, offering an intuitive graphical and analytical solution to the bond capacity, with the following steps. (1) The adherent stress-strain curve plotted against stress-axis is regarded as the wine glass; (2) analogizing the debonding fracture energy divided by the adherent strip thickness to the volume of wine poured into the wine glass; (3) the wine level height corresponds to the adherent tensile stress at the bond capacity. This Wine Glass model has unveiled the mechanism governing bond capacity. Its robustness and accuracy have been validated on lap-shear tests comprising linear and nonlinear adherents (CFRP and Fe-SMA), as well as linear and nonlinear adhesives. In addition, this model enables researchers and engineers to evaluate the bond capacities of bonded joints in shear, even without computers.
