IfcBoundaryCondition . They are assigned directly to the subtypes of IfcBuildingElement , for example, IfcBeam and IfcElementComponent , but not to the subtypes of the class IfcStructuralMember . The SHM relevant information consists of the type, location and state of the sensors as well as path to the sensor data. In the future, the damage information should also be a part of the IFC file since it is of great importance for SHM. The class IfcSensor together with property set Pset_SensorTypeCommon is used to describe the sensors and their state. To save the path to sensor data within the IFC file, a property set Custom_Pset_Sensors is introduced. The sensors as well as structural connections are connected to corresponding elements, such as beams, using the relationship IfcRelConnectsElements . The detailed information on proposed property sets Custom_Pset_FE_ANSYS and Custom_Pset_Sensors is listed in Table 1.

Depending on the structure, it is necessary to include additional mass within the structural analysis. For this purpose, the objects of the class IfcBuildingElementProxy together with a custom quantity set for mass definition were used. Corresponded FE elements in ANSYS APDL are MASS21 and SURF154.
Fig. 3. Schematic diagram of BIM-based FE model generation.
The schematic diagram of the proposed approach for BIM-based FE model generation is shown in Fig. 3. As stated previously, at first the IFC file contains only the geometry and material properties of the structure. Subsequently, the SHM as well as FEM relevant information is added to the IFC file. IfcOpenShell and a custom Python script are used to generate a macro file for ANSYS APDL. Firstly, it should be iterated over elements from the classes IfcBuildingElement and IfcElementComponent , so their FEM as well as material related properties will be extracted
