5. Conclusion The university hospital of Zurich (HOF building) is a good example to demonstrate the strategy of strengthening using external steel frames. It is a very effective strengthening measure that reduced the strong eccentricity of the floor plan and improve of the overall structural integrity. The intervention in the existing structure could be kept to a minimum and the operation of the hospital was only slightly disturbed. In addition, the measures could be implemented in a few days due to the prefabricated steel elements. Other strengthening methods (e.g. FRP, FRCM, UHPC) where not suited in this case due to their invasive execution processes in the building interior and the associated obstruction of operations. In addition, reinforcing the existing structural elements (reinforced concrete walls and columns) with other strengthening methods was not sufficient to overcome the highly eccentric floor plan. With regard to the connection stiffness, it was shown that in most cases the assumption of a rigid connection is justifiable in the example of the university hospital in Zurich. Stiffness values were found within the Eurocode for the steel-to-steel connections and the specific ETA for the post-installed adhesive connection in concrete. References H. Meireles, R. Pinho, R.
