Abstract C rrosion is nearly unavoid ble phenomenon in most of the metal materials. In this paper, its effect on the sharp edge crack propagation under tensile loading is investigated. A rectangular plate with a perpendicular crack and an elliptical corrosion pit nearby is modelled via finite elements and fracture beh vior of the crack is analyzed. Th multi-param ter fracture mechanics concept is applied, i. . the higher-order terms of the Williams expansion are calculated by means of the over-d terministic metho and utilized for tang ntial stress appr ximation in the vicinity of th crack tip. Thus, the g neralized MTS criterion could be used f r estimation of the crack deflection angle. Th calc lations were performed for a s lected corr sion pit siz and location considering various crack lengths. Th results are iscussed and a crack length with the highest probability to deflect from its original perpendicular propagation direction is found. © 20 23 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. In this paper, its effect on the sharp edge crack propagation under tensile loading is investigated. A rectangular plate with a perpendicular crack and an elliptical corrosion pit nearby is modelled via finite elements and fracture behavior of the crack is analyzed. The multi-parameter fracture mechanics concept is applied, i.e. the higher-order terms of the Williams expansion are calculated by means of the over-deterministic method and utilized for tangential stress approximation in the vicinity of the crack tip. Thus, the generalized MTS criterion could be used for estimation of the crack deflection angle. The calculations were performed for a selected corrosion pit size and location considering various crack lengths. The results are discussed and a crack length with the highest probability to deflect from its original perpendicular propagation direction is found. 10th International Conference on Materials Structure and Micromechanics of Fracture Fatigue crack propagation under corrosion of high-strength steel Lucie Malíková a,b *, Pavel Doubek b,c , Tereza Juhászová a,b , Martin Krejsa d , Stanislav Seitl a,b a Czech Academ of S iences, Institute of Physics of Materials, v. v. i., Žižkova 22 616 00 Brno, Czech Republic b Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Institute of Structural Mechanics, Veveří 331/95, 602 00 Brno, Czech Republic c OMNI-X CZ s.r.o., Š amalova 60a, 615 00 Brno, Czech Republic d V Š B - Technical University of Ostrava, Faculty of Civil Engineering, L.Po déště 1875/17, 708 00 Ostrava- Poruba, Czech Republic
