• Taking into account the size of the induced cracks, it can be stated that the design rule of Eurocode 3 e ffi ciently covers the potential e ff ect of cracks in this geometry and for the considered steel grade. • The failure assessment diagram is able to predict the occurrence of failure with an intrinsic factor of safety ranging 1.05-1.08 for option 2 and option 1, respectively. It should be added that the number of data is too limited to carry out a statistical analysis. Moreover, the data are limited to one geometry and one (relatively tough) steel grade. It is of interest to extend the type of geometry and the steel grades investigated.
