Abstract An analysis of longitudinal fracture in a beam structure that exhibits non-linear viscoelastic behaviour is carried-out. The angle of rotation of the free end of the upper crack arm changes smoothly with time. The beam is continuously inhomogeneous along its thickness. The mechanical behaviour of the beam is described by a viscoelastic model consisting of both linear and non-linear springs and dashpots subjected to strains which change continuously with time. The strain energy release rate is derived by analyzing the balance of the energy. The solution of the strain energy release rate accounts for both non-linear viscoelastic behaviour and smooth change of the angle of rotation of the upper crack arm. Verification of the strain energy release rate is carried-out by using the J -integral approach. A parametric study is performed. © 2022 The Authors. Published by ELSEVIER B.V.
