Abstract Using numerical methods, the problem of determining the limiting state of a metal shell under thermomechanical loading and taking into account contact with an aggressive hydrogen-containing medium is solved. The acting stresses are determined by solving a nonlinear boundary value problem for a shell of revolution. The method is demonstrated on a construction - a muffle designed for high-temperature annealing of electrolytic steel in bell-type furnaces. © 2022 The Authors. Published by ELSEVIER B.V. INTRODUCTION The problem of determining the strength of shell metal structures under variable thermomechanical loads is quite common in engineering practice. Methods for determining the stress state and strength of shell structures under static, thermal and variable power loads are well developed and presented in the literature, Grigorenko and Vasilenko (1981), Shevchenko and Prokhorenko (1981), Emelyanov and Mironov (2012). The problems of determining the strength of metal structures that are operated in an aggressive hydrogen containing environment are also of great applied importance and their specific features. Predicting the behavior and determining the limiting state of such structures that are operated in aggressive environments and are loaded with thermal and forces is not a completely solved scientific problem. The difficulty lies in the simultaneous 15th International Conference on Mechanics, Resource and Diagnostics of Materials and Stru tures Determination of the limiting state of the muffle shell I. G.
