Digital images of the deformed surface layer are used to analyze dynamics of deformation defects accumulation. The structure of deformation defects is represented by a change in characteristics of their distribution on a surface. Discrete deformations of a sample surface layer characterize dynamics of microplastic deformation accumulation during diffuse fracture. The authors suggested a methodological approach to determine the state of damage to a structural material in the range of elastic deformations by deformation defects parameters of a laboratory specimen surface. © 2022 The Authors. 1. Statement of the problem The development a unified approach to assess characteristics of operational damage to a metal structure requires consideration to influence (structural, technological, operational) factors on the destruction process. Shear formation on a surface of the deformable material often occurs at stresses below the elastic limit. Microplastic deformations are initiated by structural mechanisms that depend on the nature of the material, which defines durability of the metal
