2.5. Surface Profiling

Ceramic plates are usually used in body armor to provide the fourth level of protection on body armor standards by the National Institute of Justice. The ballistic performance of body armor in this level is tested by a .30 Calibre M2 AP bullet with a velocity of 878 m / s National Institute of Justice (2008). The geometry specifications of the projectile are taken from the literature Jones and Delorme (2008). The plate is modeled as a complete model (not a quarter or a half model) to discover the e ff ect of a di ff erent hitting location on the surface profiles. The dimension of the ceramic tile is chosen to be greater than ten times the projectile core diameter, following Hazell et al. Hazell (2008). Numerical models are prepared with the validated ceramic tile model and the projectile suggested by the National Institute of Justice. The ceramic tile is modeled with the JH2 material model with SPH element formulation. The
