circular profile. The elements used in the mesh are C3D8R for the discretization of the strand wires, with a mesh pitch of about 1.9 mm (Fig. 1a). The contact conditions between the wire surfaces are modeled using surface-to-surface contact with a friction coefficient of 0.2. An axial load is applied to the strand model [1]. The numerical results obtained for strand 23 (steel core strand) are shown in Fig. 1b. The maximum magnitude of the Von Mises stress, occurring in the contact area with the strand core, is about 1983 MPa, as shown in Fig.1b.
