4. Material versus Structure: Recalling Johann Sebastian Bach Although any material is a structure (macrostructure, microstructure, etc.), not any structure is a material, since immaterial structures do exist, such as a Bach’s fugue or a Beethoven Symphony. Fig. 8 shows the portrait of Johann Sebastian Bach due to Elias Gottlob Haussmann (with the canon triplex in the hands), whereas Fig. 9 offers the early bars of the Fugue No 1 in C Major BWV 846 of The Well-Tempered Clavier (Book I).
