3. Research Method 3.1. Geometrical model

The automatic thickness checking machine in this paper was designed using Festo linear drive as its driving motion system with overhead crane arrangement is applied as its structure model. As presented in Fig. 1, the -axes of overhead crane arrangement must have two support points over its -axis. In this paper, the -axis was set up using the Festo Linear Drive ELGC-BS-KF series with 600mm strokes so that it can support the measurement of multiple brake pads in a row. The -axis was set up using Festo Linear Drive ELGC-BS-KF series 100mm for the motorized drive as it can accommodate the measurement of the length of brake pads. Furthermore, the -axis series also use the Festo Linear Drive ELFC-KF series 200mm as a supporting drive for the -axis. The -axis on this design was designed using another linear drive series as before because it should accommodate a vertical movement; thus, this axis uses Festo Mini Slides EGSC-BS-KF series as it can perform a telescopic movement. Assembly settings between -axis and -axis components were connected axially with 2 Festo Adapter Kit. In contrast, the connection between -axis and -axis assemblies is connected laterally with the same adapter kit. The model was designed using the same Festo Motor EMMB-AS-60-02-SB, Festo Parallel Kit-EAMM-U-45-V32-40P-63, and Festo Adapter Kit EHAA-D L2-45-L2-45.

The price aspect of each component had an important role in obtaining a relatively cheap machine compared to another machine that has function similarity. Aside from the price aspect, the quality aspect remains the most crucial outlook on any machine (Beckers et al., 2021). Therefore, the moving parts object to this design using Festo's parts known for their excellent quality. The estimation price of each component is presented in Table 1, which disclosed that the Festo parts significantly impact the total estimation price. The estimation of the total price of the structure of the automatic thickness checking machine is €4500. This price estimation is relatively cheaper than other automatic thickness checking machines. Thus this machine can be produced and help the company to check brake pads rapidly and efficiently.
