In this regard, it is worth noting the importance playedby the historical archives in preserving the collective cultural identity of entire populations. The seismic events that occurred in 2016, startingon August 24, involved four regions: Abruzzo,Marche, Lazio, and Umbria. These events had high seismic intensity and distribution and caused severe damage to the cultural heritage, involvingabout 5,100 buildings of cultural interest. In order to evaluate the extension and type of damage, about 5,200 surveys have been made, including first and second-levels surveys. In some cases, more than one surveyhas been made on the same item to check the evolution of the damage scenario due to the occurrence of further seismic events. The safeguardingof movable goods belonging to the cultural heritage was undertaken by the fire department and the army, which provided temporaryprotection through proper devices. Inmanycases, the contents of buildings were removed and placed in temporary storage facilities, four of which were managed by the MiBACT ( Caserma dei Carabinieri Forestali a t Cittaducale, Santo Chiodo depot a t Spoleto, Forte Malatesta at Ascoli Piceno, and Mole Vanvitelliana a t Ancona).
