The damage to — andevenmore the loss of — a cultural good is an injury to the community. Suchawareness forces the community to undertake a rigorous and careful approach to defending its cultura l heritage, even during the occurrence of disastrous events. It is necessary that the community take care of its cultural heritage to avoid possible damage evenduring“ordinary” events, so tha t it may strengthen the acquired knowledge and capability to intervene in case of emergencies (resilience). Two different types of damage canaffect the cultural heritage during the occurrenceof a disastrous event. The first type, immediatedamage , impacts artistic artifacts throughextraordinary loading in thepositionwhere theyareplaced (direct damage) or through the collapse of the building which contains them (indirect damage).
