After welding, when the workpiece is completely cooled down residual deformation have been analyzed founding a maximum out of plane displacements of 0.63 mm (Fig. 4). The residual deformations are limited because it has been welded symmetrically limiting the deformations on the web, secondly the flange has a high thickness of 100 mm and weld shrinkage has a limited effect. To replicate the exceptional load, a distributed force in correspondence of the bolts has been applied. The seismic action has been simplified as the force needed to start yielding the web, oscillating between the maximum and zero as in Fig. 6. In fact, the joint has to maintain its tolerance even in the presence of high loads, the weaker component of the chain is the weld. Bolts have not been modelled because their influence is considered negligible on the weld behavior.
