2.4. Volterra On January 31st, 2014, about 35 meters of the city walls of Volterra collapsed in the area between “Porta dell’Arco” and “Piazza dei Fornelli”. In this section the wall had a height of 9.5 meters and a retaining role. The collapse dangerously discovered the foundations of adjacent buildings, as well as Palazzo Stella (Fig. 5). In this case moisture together with recent works on the Natural Gas pipeline probably played a role in the collapse. Evidences of moisture appear on the external face of the historical wall (Fig. 6) before the collapse.
