appears in so many western movies directed by the master John Ford, so that the term Monument Valley Profile (MVP) is coined. With regard to music and fracture mechanics, and on the basis of the hierarchical microstructure of cold drawn pearlitic steels (consisting of two levels of colonies and lamellae), a link is established between the material microstructure and the multi-scale ( multi-level or multi-layer ) structure of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, with superb examples such as the Christmas Oratorium or the Well Tempered Clavier. In the matter of painting and fracture mechanics, a link is established in this paper, because the anisotropic fracture behaviour of cold drawn pearlitic steel (with deflected polygonal cracks, mixed mode propagation and sudden changes in crack paths) clearly resembles the cubist painting by Pablo Picasso and the rayonist painting by Mijail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova. Sculpture and fracture mechanics are related in this paper through the microscopic modes of fracture associated with hydrogen embrittlement of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steel: hydrogen enhanced localized plasticity (HELP) in hot rolled or slightly cold drawn pearlitic steels associated with Michelangelo stone sculpture texture (MSST) and hydrogen enhanced decohesion, delamination or debonding (HEDE) in heavily cold drawn pearlitic steels linked with Donatello wooden sculpture texture (DWST). In Memoriam The paper is dedicated to the memory of Professors Dominique Francois and Keith Miller, masters and friends, whose enthusiastic and forward-looking action allowed the development of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS), formerly the European Group on Fracture (EGF). The paper is also dedicated to the memory of Professor Dr. Robert Goldstein, master and friend, and founder of Russian fracture mechanics. References Toribio, J., 1992b.
