In particular, connections and links are established between fracture mechanics & structural integrity (on one side) and the philosophy, literature (poetry), cinema (movies), music, painting and sculpture. © 2020 The Authors. Introduction: Philosophy and fracture mechanics Materials behavior is influenced by the previous mechanical history (load, stress or strain trajectory) and by the surrounding physico-chemical environment, so that the ideas proposed by the Dutch philosopher Baruch de Spinoza about the hetero-determined nature of human being are totally adequate in this matter. In the same sense, the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset coined the v ery famous sentenc e “Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia” (translated into English as “I am I and my circumstance”) which is the key -stone of his philosophy of human life. On the basis of this, and paraphrasing José Ortega y Gasset, the author of this paper (Tor ibio, 1992a; 2000) established the innovative idea that “the material is itself and its circumstance” (Toribio, 2000) emphasizing the st t is r ff rs i ti ti l r t t r l ti s i t rt fr t r i s t sis f r i s r s r f t t r i t fi l f fr t r str t r l i tegrity of cold drawn pearlitic steel and in the conceptual fr r f is t ts r fl ti s t t il s f rts iti s its r l ti it s i .
