3. Mini Sample Tester Device - MSTD
After the preliminary tests, a new prototype was developed - Mini Sample Tester Device (MSTD) (Fig. 7) - capable to test miniaturised specimens in uniaxial loading (compression and tension). The equipment has a maximum capacity of 2.5 kN and a stroke of analysis of 42.7 mm. The linear motion of the equipment is guaranteed by a step motor combined to a ball screw. The motion is transmitted to a free body where the mobile-grip is attached. The fixed-grip is mechanically fastened to an “S-Type” load cell and all the components are guided by two rectified shafts. This layout allows test materials in tension but also in compression, once all the components are in a common longitudinal plane.
