Experimental set-up: the Instron 8850 biaxial servo-hydraulic testing system, the DIC measurement system Vic-3D and the infrared system Flir SC7700M (a); two surfaces of specimen for DIC and IR analysis (b). Conclusions It was revealed that with increasing stiffness of the loading system (by decreasing the gauge length of specimens), the realization of the stable postcritical deformation stage is increasing as well as the inhomogeneity of plastic flow and temperature in the crack tip. The results shown that the failure of the specimen with longer gauge length caused the localized heating of material. The digital image correlation technique and the infrared thermography are important tools for observing and studying the nucleation and propagation of the crack in bodies with stress concentrators during loading. The combined use of several registration systems allows obtaining accurate and complex experimental data for further modeling of the inelastic behavior and processes of the stable crack growth in metals.
