1. Introduction São José’s farm is located in the Cordilheira district of Cachoeira do Sul and is directly linked to the formation of this municipality. It is known as Tafona’s Farm, because it has until the present day a Tafona of the times of its construction. Currently, the property belongs to Maria Irtília Vieira da Cunha Silva and her husband: Marco Aurélio de Castro Schntz. It is part of the sixth generation of people with the surname ‘’Vieira da Cunha’’ who lived in the headquarters house, built between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. In this work, the inventory elaboration is a fundamental tool that allows the identification and registration of goods of interest for preservation, as well as giving ideas on alternatives of interventions in these goods. It constitutes an instrument complementary to the assessment as a listed building and is of fundamental importance for the preservation. The inventory process was initially considered only for the cataloging of listed assets, and later came to be understood as an instrument capable of stimulating reflection, research and thus, the protection of the patrimony, taking more and more importance for the understanding and safeguarding of assets. “The growing need to know and recognize cultural goods and to expand on the symbolic issues they exert on them have made inventories take the necessary proportions for the safeguarding of the heritage, that is, the extent to which the perception of the assets expands, so do the importance of inventories” (Carvalho et al., 2011, p.02). Inventory means listing, recording, cataloging, sorting and evaluating. According to the Lausanne Letter of 1990, inventories are primary sources of data for scientific research and study. Thus, they must integrate information in different levels of precision and fidelity, since knowledge, even if superficial, can serve as a basis for protection (Cury, 2000; Icomos, 1990, p.3-4). In the case of the present work, in addition to the registration of the property, there is also an environment, that is, the way that area was occupied, the use and appreciation of the available natural and cultural resources, the technical-constructive systems applied, among other contents, which constitute cultural references, which can, in turn, constitute milestones for the population to construct their collective identity (Fonseca, apud Motta et al., 1998). In this sense, the history of the owner family is relatively well documented, which allows us to elaborate an interesting analysis on the ways of life and the relation between the residents of the farm’s main house and the construction. It is understood that the study of the built environment of a given site can become a tool for analysis and understanding of its chronological development, since there is a clear connection between architecture and past events. Thus, it is interesting to carry out a work such as the architectural and historical inventory that guides the actions related to the preservation of the patrimony, acting as information gathering to identify and characterize the different artistic and cultural manifestations linked to the patrimonial assets, with the objective of that the recognition and preservation of assets are based on a prior systematic study. As architecture is one of the material expressions of a people's culture, the sense of identity and belonging of citizens is evident by the social and emotional relationship established between people and heritage. Thus, this study aims to highlight the historical value, the importance of preservation and disseminate to society the architectural heritage of Tafona’s Farm through the inventory of its architecture. 2. Project structuring and stages The project "Tafona’s farm: a trip to the world of the memory of Rio Grande do Sul" arose from the contact of people from Cachoeira do Sul interested in the preservation of that good, with professors of the Federal University of Santa Maria / Campus Cachoeira do Sul. From this initial contact, the project was developed to be carried out through the work of a multidisciplinary team made up of professors and academics working in Engineering, Architecture, History, Museology, Arts, Tourism and other related fields. Several stages were initially conceived to carry out the project.
