4. Conclusion The implementation of the ARGO Tunnel Management System represents a transformative step in the management and maintenance of ASPI’s tunnel network. By integrating cloud-based data management, high-resolution laser scanning technologies, and a structured risk-based inspection workflow, ARGO has replaced fragmented, spreadsheet driven processes with a unified digital ecosystem designed for precision, scalability, and regulatory compliance. One of the most significant achievements of ARGO is its role in operationalizing the Italian Guidelines for the Risk Classification, Safety Evaluation, and Monitoring of Existing Tunnels (D.M. 247/2022). The system is now fundamental for applying the guideline’s structured Levels 0–4 assessment process, ensuring that each tunnel segment is evaluated consistently, classified according to its Attention Class (CdA), and managed through a transparent and traceable workflow. ARGO automates the collection of Level 0 and Level 1 data, supports Level 2 CdA computation, and provides the digital basis for targeted Level 3 and Level 4 analyses. Without an integrated platform, meeting the guideline’s requirements, which span hundreds of parameters, 20-meter segmentation, and multidisciplinary risk scoring, would have been far more complex to accomplish, time-consuming, and prone to inconsistencies. Since the beginning of its deployment, ARGO has already demonstrated measurable performance improvements. In 2024, the system handled more than 600 laser scanner surveys and processed over 2 TB of 3D point cloud data, enabling accurate, comparable, and repeatable assessments across Italy’s 597-tunnel network. The shift to a centralized cloud-based registry has reduced data retrieval and reporting times improving operational responsiveness and decision-making speed. The integration of guideline-based Attention Classes within ARGO has resulted in smarter inspection planning. Looking ahead, ASPI plans to execute approximately 2,500 tunnel inspections in 2026. Overall, the results demonstrate that ARGO is not merely a management platform but a foundational infrastructure for implementing Italy’s national tunnel safety framework. It ensures that every phase of the guideline from initial data collection to advanced structural assessments is executed with transparency, precision, and repeatability. As Italy’s tunnel network continues to age and regulatory expectations evolve, ARGO provides the digital backbone needed to safeguard structural integrity, enhance safety, and support long-term asset resilience. By enabling proactive, data-driven, and guideline-compliant tunnel management, ARGO sets a new benchmark for infrastructure stewardship and stands as a model for adoption across other complex transportation networks.
