Abstract The aging of tunnels highlights the critical importance of a systematic and consistent approach to inspection, refurbishment, and safety management, in line with established asset management best practices. This paper presents an overview of the Tunnel Asset Management System (ARGO) developed by Autostrade per l’Italia S.p.A. (ASPI) and its subsidiary Movyon, to oversee a network of 597 highway tunnels spanning 365 kilometers. The ARGO system effectively addresses large-scale maintenance operations, involving more than 2,500 site inspections annually. It schedules regular inspections and laser scanner surveys, guided by risk classification and regulatory requirements. Data collected from visual inspections and laser scanner surveys is integrated into the system's database. Advanced data analysis techniques, including image processing and point cloud analysis, are employed to detect defects, assess their severity, and prioritize necessary maintenance. In addition, ARGO manages and supports the entire process required for compliance with the Italian guidelines for the safety assessment and management of existing tunnels, ensuring consistency, traceability, and alignment with national regulatory frameworks.
