considerable variability in the results, the beneficial effect of the collar is evident, becoming more pronounced as the collar is embedded deeper below the bed surface. The hooked collars yielded only marginal improvements in performance compared to simple collar designs. Figure 2b shows the same graph for round-nosed rectangular piers. Compared with the circular pier, the scour reduction is more pronounced for this shape of piers, with scour reduced by more than 50% with respect to the absence of the collar.
