7. Digital documentation of inspection findings After carrying out a detailed investigation of a bridge’s bonded post-tensioning system and gaining valuable insights into the tendons’ as-built configuration and condition, it is highly recommended to record this information in a form that will remain accessible for future reference. A 2D “digital twin” of the structure on a cloud-based data platform is ideal for this purpose. Such a platform can store all relevant non-destructive testing data (UPE scans, GPR scans, etc.) relating to any particular “spot” on the structure (the location of which is indicated on a 2D drawing or sketch), along with all photographs, sketches, inspection logs, and any other pertinent information (see example in Figure 13). In the case of the “digital twin” platform shown in Figure 13, IoT-connectivity enables all inspection data from compatible NDT devices to be automatically stored in the appropriate “spot” in the “digital twin”. By uploading the results and observations to a digital repository in this way, the knowledge gained from the inspection is preserved and can be easily retrieved the next time the bridge’s condition is assessed. This supports more efficient maintenance and asset management strategies. Future maintenance teams can consult the stored inspection data to plan targeted interventions, knowing exactly where issues of concern were identified. This proactive use of data helps extend the service life of the bridge by ensuring timely repairs and preventing issues from worsening. In turn, it protects the value of the asset and avoids the environmental and economic costs that would be associated with premature deterioration, such as the need for early replacement of the structure.

Asset value and stakeholder benefits Proactive inspection and preservation of critical structural systems, such as a bridge’s post-tensioning, can substantially enhance the asset’s value by ensuring structural integrity and longevity. Early identification of potential voids or corrosion risks allows for targeted remediation before any tendon failures or concrete distress occur. This preventative approach minimizes unexpected downtime or traffic closures and extends the service life of the infrastructure. By avoiding major incidents and costly emergency repairs, the bridge owner’s investment is safeguarded through reduced future liabilities.
