Conclusions The Italian Bridge Guidelines introduced a structured, multi-level approach that, starting from the inventory, addresses aspects related to safety checks and inspections, defectiveness, and criteria for the multi-level assessment of risk for road structures, representing an important technical reference for sector operators, unique in its kind. The Operational Instructions, whose first version dates back to 2022, provide road managers with clarifications and practical guidance, and their updates are aimed at the continuous improvement of the processes for managing the safety of existing bridges. The update adopted by the Higher Council of Public Works in 2025 provides further elements of clarity and uniformity for the application of the Guidelines, standardizing the approach and facilitating control and certification activities by the managers.
