Introduction Extending the service life of infrastructure systems has become a key strategy for promoting resource efficiency and supporting sustainability and risk-informed asset management. Increasing research efforts, including studies e.g., by Thöns, Faber and Val (2017) and Long, Alcover and Thöns (2021), investigate service life extension decisions across different types of infrastructure, showing that such interventions can enhance both economic and safety performance, particularly when integrated with optimized monitoring strategies. (2023) indicate emission reduction Abstract As existing transport infrastructure continues to age and traffic demand rises, there is a growing urgency to reduce emissions. In this context, extending the service life of infrastructure emerges as a key strategy. This paper introduces a basic decision-analytical approach to infrastructure service life extension with an integrated model basis. The model basis facilitates the joint assessment of structural reliability, risk, life cycle costs, and environmental impacts.
