Overall, the Helmallery project exemplified the integration of advanced architectural modeling with cutting-edge digital technologies, pushing the boundaries of virtual environment design and offering insights into the capabilities and challenges of building in the metaverse. 4. Integration of Blockchain 4.1. Blockchain for Secure Transaction Management The integration of blockchain technology within the Helmallery was a critical component designed to ensure the security, transparency, and efficiency of digital asset transactions (Ceccarelli, 2022). By utilizing Ethereum's blockchain, the project was able to leverage smart contracts to automate and authenticate transactions involving digital artworks and other assets (Davila Delgado et al, 2020). This not only provided a secure environment for transactions but also facilitated the immutable recording of ownership and provenance, crucial for maintaining trust in the virtual marketplace (Canny, 2021). Implementing blockchain technology presented several challenges. The first was scalability, as the Ethereum network can suffer from high transaction fees (gas fees) and slow processing times during periods of congestion. To address this, the project explored Layer 2 solutions such as rollups and sidechains, which provide faster transactions and lower fees while still securing assets on the main Ethereum blockchain. Additionally, the integration required meticulous smart contract programming to prevent security vulnerabilities and ensure that contracts executed as intended without loopholes or exploits (Ethereum.org, 2024). 4.2. Impact on Digital Artwork Transactions Blockchain's impact extended beyond simple transaction management. It revolutionized the way digital artworks are viewed in terms of ownership and value, allowing artists to mint their works as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This not only provided artists with new avenues for monetization but also allowed collectors to securely purchase and trade digital art within the metaverse, knowing that blockchain technology provided a record of authenticity and ownership (Sotheby’s, 2021).
