The shell and solid element interfaces were created using the standard MPC method based on constraint equations formulation. The shell-solid contact boundaries and resulting constraint equation interfaces are shown in Fig. 11. a b c

Linear elastic material properties were applied to the FE model. Higher order elements were used for model discretization. The maximum element size for the sub-model did not exceed 10 mm. The local mesh at the notch radius was created following the IIW recommendations, where minimum four elements were used at the notch radius with smooth transition to the relatively coarser mesh away from the notch. The global and local mesh of FE model is shown in Fig. 12.
