Materials and experimental methods
HVI experiment on fabrics was conducted by the two-stage light gas gun, in which spherical aluminum projectiles impacted multiple fabrics targets at velocities 4.0~4.2 km/s. A total of 8 HVI experiments were performed on 6 kinds of fabrics, Al mesh, and Al plate specimens. Types and properties of materials used in experiments are described in Section 2.1. The shielding configuration and HVI experimental setup are outlined in Section 2.2 and Section 2.3, respectively. 2.1. Materials High performance fabrics were chosen as target material, including inorganic and polymeric fabrics, like Ceramic (Nextel), Basalt, Quartz, Aramid, UHMWPE, and Carbon fiber fabrics. The Al mesh has a rhombus mesh structure which is formed by weaving. The hole size is 1 mm × 2 mm and the material are 2017 Al alloys. The 5A06 Al alloys is selected for comparison of shielding performance, for this material is commonly used to manufacture spacecraft bulkhead. Table 1 shows material properties of the Al 2017, Al 5A06, and fibers used to weave the fabrics. The material property values are obtained from material performance test or data sheets provided by the manufacturer.
