The effect of edge surface quality was significant: milling improved fatigue life 5 times. Edge delaminations caused by the waterjet cutter were probably the cause of the more frequent occurrence of mode I damage mechanism. This mode caused generally lower fatigue lives. Shearing of the nearest ply drops to the gauge section is one of the damage initiation mechanism for the tailored blank thermoplastic composite. The fatigue lives of the retested specimens after run out were up to 1000 times lower that new specimens cycled on the same load level.
