4. Conclusion
This paper presented the results of a preliminary study to find out restoration mortars for the calcarenite stone of Volubilis. After characterization of quarried calcarenite stone, restoration mortars were formulated using aerial lime and regional sand and brick dust. Laboratory analyses of mortars after one month of maturation showed that brick dust improves the compressive strength. Its effect on the porosity and the capillary absorption depends on whether it is used as aggregate or as lime substitution. A comparison of the properties of the calcarenite stone and the mortars made it possible to choose a mortar that seems the most compatible in terms of hydric and mechanical properties. As perspectives, the mortars will be characterised after 3 months and 1 year to validate the preliminary mortar recipe for restoration of the Volubilis calcarenite stone.
