6. Conclusion
In this study, stability analysis to sliding of upstream slope of homogeneous embankment was conducted, taking into account dam’s saturation line and seismic effect which are not considered in Maghreb guide of the small dams design (PNUD, 1987). The deterministic calculation of stability to sliding with classical Fellenius method, without considering these two parameters, led to an overestimated safety coefficient. We demonstrated in this study, that for a better accuracy of safety margin, the reliability approach is necessary. The values of failure probability of upstream slope embankment, considering saturation line for different seismic zones, are lower than the admissible, which confirms the importance of these two parameters. Deterministic methods such as those described in Maghreb guide of the small dams design (PNUD, 1987) and used by engineers are necessary and well-developed, but still inadequate and must be completed by reliability methods, to accurately understand certain stability phenomena.
