Fig. 2. Shake maps of 26th September 1997 earthquake (Allen et al. 2008) and of 30th October 2016 earthquake (provided by Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, http://shakemap.ingv.it/shake/index.html). 3. Palazzo Comunale Palazzo Comunale is a building in the historic center of Camerino and before the 2016 earthquakes it was used as a Town Hall. It is possible to find this ancient building even in some plans from the 13th century where it already shows the same square shape and the same internal courtyard that we can observe nowadays (Fig. 3c). As shown in Fig. 3a, Palazzo Comunale is part of a masonry complex (masonry aggregate); it is part of a non homogenous group of structural units whose behaviors may be influenced mutually when subjected to dynamic actions, depending on the effectiveness of the connections attained during the historical construction process. In particular, Palazzo Comunale adjoins on its West side a theater called “Teatro Marchetti” that was originally built as a wooden structure in 1728 demolishing preexisting structures. The structure we observe nowadays was built in the mid-19 century. Palazzo Comunale is a three-floors building with an average floor surface of about 1400 m 2 . The building stands on the crest of the hill occupied by the most ancient part of the historic center of Camerino; for that reason, there is a difference in altitude of about 3 meters between the main façade and the back façade. The presence at the first floor of three state-rooms with double height and with camorcanna vaults (vaults made of plaster and reed straws hanging from wooden centerings) causes irregularities in elevation (staggered floors) and strongly affected the plan layout of the upper floors splitting them in two portions that do not communicate with each other.
