4. Conclusion This study investigates the use of satellite-based multi-temporal synthetic aperture radar interferometry (MTInSAR) for network-scale structural monitoring and preliminary structural assessment of bridges. This paper adopts a methodology for the practical and automatic use of displacement time series associated with persistent scatterers (PSs) on the terrestrial surface to recognise ongoing deformation phenomena affecting bridges in a given investigated area of interest. The methodology is implemented in a user-friendly geographical information system. A case-study highway network located in Roma is analysed by using Sentinel-1 and COSMO-SkyMed satellite data. The outputs are described in terms of spatial density of PSs and deformation scenarios With reference to the investigated case-study area, appropriate spatial coverage of PSs is observed on motorway bridges, while the PS density may decrease for bridges belonging to low-level roadways. The results discussed with reference to several case-study bridges can be used for the comprehensive development of an effective MTInSAR-based approach for bridge monitoring pushing towards a future efficient and safety-oriented management of roadway and railway networks.
